RE: DEAR MR. REPUBLICAN'S ADVICE TO BOTH LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES

in #news6 years ago

Mass shootings are statistically insignificant, especially if you don't use the Feds' bogus definition of "two victims + the shooter." That's called a double-homicide with a suicide, not a mass shooting.

Using a definition of 4+ victims not counting the shooter, there have only been 2000 total victims of mass shooters in 37 years, and 600 of those were from a single event in Las Vegas. Who gives a fuck? I mean, obviously the families and friends of those 2000 people, but so what? There are national issues for the national government to focus on, and mass shootings are a pretend problem. Each life we save from a mass shooting would cost many thousands of times more than each life we could save lost to actual national problems, like the epidemic of suicide, or heart disease, or cancer, or gang violence, etc. etc.

Mass shootings are nationally irrelevant. School shootings are even just a fraction of mass shootings. There is no reason to spend any money on this. Want to stop gun deaths? Focus on the suicides first, then the homicides, then get down to that less than 1% of shooting deaths that are mass shootings.

But, let's get to the very core of the gun issue in America: we have a constitution that was written for an agrarian set of 13 distinct nations under constant threat of invasion by the British or various Native American nations, or the French, etc, at a time when electricity had only just been discovered and congressmen routinely died of various diseases en route in their horse-drawn carriages to the Capitol.

It is badly in need of updating, and has been for at least 100 years. Unfortunately, it has become a hallowed document to many on the Right, and they think it would be blasphemous to make changes to the holy writ of Thomas Jefferson and the Founding Fathers. That attitude needs to change, and then the constitution itself needs to change, to reflect modern technology.

Unless and until that happens, this debate will continue to be a joke, as one side is living over 200 years in the past while they talk about modern issues, and the other side then refuses to listen to criticism because at least they aren't freakin' dinosaurs.
