Seattle’s $15 minimum wage may actually cost restaurant workers, study finds

in #news7 years ago

A sharp increase in Seattle’s minimum wage may have cost low-income workers in the restaurant business as much as $125 per month even though they got paid more per hour, a study suggests.

The study by the National Bureau of Economic Research is the latest to examine Seattle’s aggressive steps since 2014 to raise the minimum wage to the highest levels in the U.S., adding to a growing debate over whether such an approach is helpful or hurtful to the workers meant to benefit.

After Seattle jacked up the minimum wage by a combined 37% over nine months, restaurants cut the average number of hours each employee worked by 9.4%, the study estimated.

Basically this just confirms what Austrian Economists have been saying for decades about the minimum wage. Which does one of two things, raising minimum wage either drives up the cost of goods and services for the consumers or it forces business owners to cut staff or only hire the most qualified people to do the work so they don't have the expensive of training people new to the industry.

If the minimum wage was good for the economy why not raise it to $20 or $40 an hour. According the Keynesians that would solve the living wage issue and increase spending in the economy. of course in reality that would put millions of people out of work and destroy the economy. So they only like to raise it a little bit so no one can see the negative effects but It looks like Seattle raised it to much to fast and now you can see those effects.

During the oil boom in North Dakota you couldn't find a fast food jobs that paid less than $15 an hour. I heard some places were even paying $19 an hour. That's because you could make 80 grand a year in the oil fields with just a high school education. $19 an hour sounded like a good wage but not in Wiliston ND where rents for a 2 bedroom apartment were 2 to 3 grand a month. Wages were high, same for rents and food but the economy didn't suffer because it was a real growth driving costs up not phony government laws and regulations.

It's just part of the socialist plan.People get less hours, make less money and wind up on public support. Food stamps, medical, and whatever other programs are out there. More people having to rely on the government to survive. Just what the left wants.

That's also part of the 8 Rules of Control by Saul Alinsky, who happens to have been very close to Hillary Clinton.

the left and right are both on the same team... duh! dont fall for the left right propaganda. Educate yourself

We sure live in a screwed up country, they'll have to cut more trees down and print more paper money to pay everyone.

Yay. We're seeing what us logical people could have predicted without the need of implementation.

Another leftist narrative collapse. The do good bleeding hearts try to help the poor, but end up making it worse.

The poor end up with less money in their pocket, because of $15 minimum wage.

the left and right are both on the same team... duh! dont fall for the left right propaganda. Educate yourself

Government just can't help themselves sticking there nose in the market!

This all boils down to the inconsiderate nature of our government oncemore
