“Sharing is fundamental to how we promote discovery, innovation, and collaboration in the digital age.”

Earlier this week the Director of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art announced new rules regarding digital archives of the nation's largest art collection. The new policy states that all images of public-domain artworks in the Museum's collection are now available for free and unrestricted use.

A growing collection of 375,000 images are available to download (LINK HERE) with incredibly high-resolution and documented detail. With the new Creative Commons agreement this world famous collection can be used legally for any and all purposes, including commercial. This is a significant move for the world's 4th most popular museum to embrace a digital era with an open-source mindset.

From Director Thomas P. Campbell - "We have been working toward the goal of sharing our images with the public for a number of years. Our comprehensive and diverse museum collection spans 5,000 years of world culture and our core mission is to be open and accessible for all who wish to study and enjoy the works of art in our care. Increasing access to the Museum’s collection and scholarship serves the interests and needs of our 21st-century audiences by offering new resources for creativity, knowledge, and ideas.”

Katherine Maher, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation said : “Wikipedia's hundreds of millions of users from around the globe will now be able to experience The Met's greatest treasures, no matter where they live. This remarkable cultural heritage is now free for anyone to view, share, and use."

Yeah! Such a fascinating resource to browse through, enjoy!

This is great to know, thank you!

Good for Steemians to have a free resource for great post and thumbnail imagery! Lots to chose from here.

but muh copyrights.

Just think how much more advanced civilization could be if information was not held prisoner by corporate and government interests.

Be sure and check out the online patent records.

This definitely opens things up and out of the hands of a corporatized art-world... hopefully others will follow for the sake of progress!

This could be a very interesting resource for the development of new artwork too, especially digital collage.

Absolutely, it means a lot for the value of digital art and the future of how it can be distributed. If these big museums start accepting the digital open-source era in this way... who knows. Big things churning in the art world!

Very Cool, will have to spend some time here. Re-steemed!

Definitely, it's a lot of fun to browse around, enjoy... and thank you!
