DARPA wants to genetically engineer plant-based sensors as battlefield surveillance tech.

New program commissioned by the US military is looking to turn plants into potential spy's for military.

I chuckle when I write this but at the same time it's no joking matter.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants to genetically engineer plant-based sensors as battlefield surveillance tech.

DARPA if you didn't know reports to the department of defense and is responsible for researching and developing tech that can be used for the US military.

Sinister purposes to say the least.

DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office (BTO) announced earlier this month a Proposers Day for the newly created Advanced Plant Technologies (APT) Program. “The program will pursue technologies to engineer robust, plant-based sensors that are self-sustaining in their environment and can be remotely monitored using existing hardware,” the agency's plan is to develop plants that can “detect the presence of certain chemicals, pathogens, radiation, and even electromagnetic signals.”

“Emerging molecular and modeling techniques may make it possible to reprogram these detection and reporting capabilities for a wide range of stimuli, which would not only open up new intelligence streams, but also reduce the personnel risks and costs associated with traditional sensors,” Blake Bextine, APT program manager, said in a press release.

They say they want to do thIs creepy shit in order to help keep military personnel out of harms way. But just like with drones (we all know how nasty that tech became over time) It's no doubt this too will only come to harm us more than anything else it will do.

The ambitious project aims to develop spy plants that can grow and thrive in natural environments, requiring genetic engineering “far beyond current practice.”

*Right now it's unclear what plants they will use to make their spies. DARPA will be hearing research proposals for the program on December 12 in Arlington, Virginia.

May I suggest spy spuds? or creeping Virginias or maybe a Venus spy trap?

All I know is that the last thing I want to wonder is whether or not that row of rose bushes is secretly spying on me.

Sort:

They won't stop until they own, patent and potentially weaponise every single living cell on this planet. I wonder if they will engineer the plants to escape into the wider eco-system? Have you seen the fact that they're also researching and designing synthetic lifeforms? scary stuff!

Yup, they also dumped 65 mil into developing neural implants and another 65 mil to make CRISPR safer.
