Joe Biden Sanctions Myanmar Military, Threatened With Not Accessing Funds

United States President Joe Biden approved an executive order to impose new sanctions on those responsible for the military coup in Myanmar

According to The Guardian, on Thursday (11/2/2021) earlier, Joe Biden said the sanctions would be imposed "on the military leaders who directed the coup, their business interests and close family members."

Washington will also take steps to prevent generals from accessing the $ 1 billion (Rp.13.9 trillion) in Myanmar government funds held in the United States.

"We will also impose strict export controls. We freeze US assets that benefit the Burmese government, while maintaining our support for health care, civil society and other areas that directly benefit the Burmese people," Biden said at the White House.

"We are ready to enact additional measures, and we will continue to work with our international partners to urge other countries to join us in this effort." stressed Biden.

On Wednesday (10/2) one of Aung San Suu Kyi's closest aides, Kyaw Tint Swe, was also detained, an official from the National League for Democracy party said in a post on Facebook.

Kyaw Tint Swe was minister for the office of the State Counselor under Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been in detention since the coup.

Kyi Toe, a member of the information committee of the Aung San Suu Kyi National League for Democracy (NLD), said Kyaw Tint Swe and four other people linked to the previous government had been seized from their homes.

Kyi Toe also revealed that election commission officials were also arrested, including some at the city level. But he did not know the exact number of those arrested.

Myanmar citizens until Thursday (11/2/2021) were still holding demonstrations against the coup carried out by the military.

Demonstrators marched peacefully on the town of Naypyidaw, the base of the military, as well as the city of Yangon, the largest commercial city.

"Don't go to the office," shouted a group of protesters outside Myanmar's central bank in Yangon City.

The action was part of a civil disobedience effort that urged civil servants and employees to strike.

Joe Biden also demanded the military to immediately release Aung San Suu Kyi from custody along with other leaders.

"I again call on the Burmese military to immediately release democratic political leaders and activists," he said.

"The military must relinquish the power it has taken." he stressed.

US State department spokesman Ned Price said Washington was taking collective action with its partners in Myanmar.

"We can charge quite a lot ourselves. We can charge an even steeper fee… by working with like-minded partners and allies," he said at a briefing.
