Reuters today reports of a court ruling from California that Starbucks, Mcdonalds, Dunkin Donuts and others must put cancer warnings on their coffee products due to them containing potentially dangerous levels of Acrylamide, a compound used in industrial processes and that has been recently found to appear in cooked french fries and other food products. I am certainly not any kind of expert on this subject, so I don't have much to add on the chemistry, except that I find it interesting that the coffee has been identified as a potential cause of cancer due to this compound, yet it appears in other foods too which contain no warning.
Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle said in a proposed decision Wednesday that Starbucks and other companies had failed to show that the threat from a chemical compound produced when roasting coffee was insignificant, court documents showed.
Starbucks and other plaintiffs in the case have until April 10 to file objections.
Officials from Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O), McDonald’s Corp (MCD.N), Dunkin’ Donuts (DNKN.O) and Peet’s did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The California-based Council for Education and Research on Toxics sued Starbucks and other companies on grounds they failed to provide warnings to consumers that the coffee they sold contained high levels of acrylamide, a toxic and carcinogenic chemical, court documents showed.

I have had this photo for years, which is also from California, so it appears that Mcdonalds is no stranger to being forced to inform it's customers that they might be being killed by the fast food and creepy clown based enterprise..

When a company is forced to tell you that their 'food' might be killing you - in a world where a vast amount of what is sold as food is well known to be killing you, yet no warnings are issued about them.. It might be wise to take notice.
Wholefoods, unprocessed, raw and as organic and fresh as possible (as nature intended) are, in my experience, the most healthy sources of nutrition on Earth and this is hardly surprising since the entire universe is an intelligence that given a chance will look after itself in many ways - we only need to stop trying to so hard to survive by paying the corporations for things that we mostly have difficulty acquiring for free because the same corporations are buying up all the resources that we need to produce things for free - naturally.

So, you could grow your own organic potatoes, and cook them at home, and you'd still have it.
I'm not saying that there aren't approximately 9,000 other things wrong with the thirtysomething ingredient American McDonald's calls "french fries," (whilst in other countries, they serve actual three ingredient fries: potatoes, oil, and salt), but in this instance, it's not some additive.
Yes, I appreciate that this is not an additive - I don''t know though, why these businesses would be forced to place such a warning, but retailers of coffee products in stores would not, for example.. Do you know?

7-11 and BP already settled and agreed to post warnings. "In his initial complaint in 2010, Metzger alleged that a 12-ounce cup of coffee contains about 10 times more acrylamide than the state's "no significant risk level." The case grew to include about 90 coffee producers, distributors and retailers, from mom-and-pop roasters to multinationals such as Nestle. Most of the companies are working together in their defense."
When it's a matter of grocery stores, I think it's up to the maker, not the store. So 7-11 sells 7-11 coffee, but at the grocery, the bags would have to be labeled by each company.
I see, ok - I just wondered why there wasn't more awareness of the issue in society in general.. but then again, people, en mass, ignore most health warnings it seems.
I think it was the BP rep in one of the articles I saw that said they just agreed to post warnings because by now most people in California tune it out.

Ok, so it's a guy from the national coffee associstion, saying that's what they thought. It's in the oregon live article i linked.
So like, they sue Starbucks, Kicking Horse, Equal Exchange, Jim's Organic Coffee, Peet's, etc., not Target, Kroger, etc. Unless there are house brands, but house brands are usually just re-labeled national brands, so they're probably still going after the original producer.
Seems like these warnings may (or should) be in just about every grocery store, restaurant, 'convenience' store, etc. At least in the USA where the food supply is very sadly corrupted beyond imagination. Oh absolutely, even 'organic' is not really organic since they are still allowed to use about 25% of the totally non organic pesticides and herbicides, while still calling the products 'organic'!
Well, things like this makes me appear to love produce from our farm that most of this synthetic food we have around. Nothing compares to nature and sometimes in the quest for sweeter man made food, we end up swallowing our death pill - little by little of course.

I think part of the reason that Starbucks' coffee has higher levels of carcinogens is because they burn the beans. And they're proud of it! It's so you have a consistent taste. No wonder I didn't like coffee when I was growing up. If they're burning the beans, it's not going to taste as good. Consistency over quality.

That is why im now laying low on fastfoods, as much as i can and possible. I drink coffee thpugh, but not an addict.
