Vatican treasurer Cardinal George Pell was sentenced to 6 years in prison for the sexual assault of two choirboys in the 1990s.
Chief Judge Peter Kidd of Victoria's County Court in central Melbourne handed down the sentence after finding the cardinal guilty in December 2018 of one count of sexual penetration of a child and four counts of committing an indecent act with a child.
The 5 week trial was held in secret "to avoid prejudicing a second trial".
Pell was a senior advisor to Pope Francis and is now the most senior Vatican official to date to be convicted of sex abuse. The role of Vatican treasurer is considered by many to be the third most senior position within the Roman Catholic church
Pell's legal team intends to appeal the charges.
