Scientists Use Tiny Magnetic Springs to Harmlessly Dissolve Microplastics in Water

in #news5 years ago

Researchers from the University of Adelaide have developed a technique to break down microplastics pollutants in water using tiny coil-shaped carbon-based magnets.

The technique does not harm nearby microorganisms, and the degradation of the pollutants can actually be used as a carbon source for algae growth.

Plastic waste finds its way into oceans and rivers poses a global environmental threat with damaging health consequences for animals, humans, and ecosystems.

Microplastics adsorb organic and metal contaminants as they travel through water and release these hazardous substances into aquatic organisms when eaten, causing them to accumulate all the way up the food chain...Carbon nanosprings are strong and stable enough to break these microplastics down into compounds that do not pose such a threat to the marine ecosystem. ~ Shaobin Wang, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Adelaide.

These findings are published in the journal Matter.

So cool

Very exciting and very very important....
Now to get the funding to place billions of them all over the earth which is now fully polluted...

👏👏👏
