Law Protects Lake Erie from Pollution by Granting It Civil Rights
Toledo, Ohio voters opted to grant Lake Erie the same rights as a person to protect it from chemical disasters.
The Lake Erie Bill of Rights was enacted with a 61% majority vote, despite well-funded opposition from agriculture and industrial lobbyists.
The United States law is a first-of-its-kind initiative to acknowledge the rights of an entire specific ecosystem.
The law recognizes the rights of the lake and its watershed, as well as citizens as part of that larger ecosystem who have “the right to a healthy environment”.
