Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles Given Suspended Sentence
Mark Karpeles, former CEO of now defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox, was given a suspended sentence in a Japanese trial for his involvement in the exchange's failing.
He was found guilty in the Tokyo District Court on just one charge of producing illegal records and given a suspended sentence.
People who held money on the exchange when it failed lost millions of dollars.
Billionaire Brock Pierce recently claimed that he had a legitimate ownership interest in the remaining assets of Mt. Gox, but Karpeles refuted that claim.
Pierce seeks a full rehabilitation of Mt. Gox, with full distribution of all assets to creditors, along with a share in the new Mt. Gox. Karpeles has publicly vowed to fight any plan by Brock Pierce.
Karpeles still faces civil suits from investors in the US.
