It is with deep sadness that actress Carrie Fisher, best known throughout the world as Princess Leia Organa of Star Wars fame, has died this morning on 8:55 at the age of 60.

A family spokesman Simon Halls on the behalf of Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd confirms that her mother passed away at the age of 60 of a massive heart attack.

Fisher was flying from London to Los Angeles on Friday, December 23; just two days before Christmas when she went into cardiac arrest.

The daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, Fisher was born into showbiz, but it was quite tumultuous in the world of theater, film, theater and television. Beginning a pilgrimage from Hollywood in 1973, Fisher enrolled in the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where she spent over a year studying acting. Two years later, she starred in the Warren Beatty pic "Shampoo", released in 1975. The film was a moderate success at the box office and garnered mixed to positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

However, she would follow it up in the year 1977, in the iconic role of Princess Leia in Star Wars. The film was a box office smash and became a cultural phenomenon the world over and also detailed her experiences working on the set of the film in her memoir "The Princess Diarist". Fisher was at the ripe young age of 19 when the first film was released.

In addition to A New Hope's sequel, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, The Force Awakens, Fisher has also starred in 1980’s The Blues Brothers, The Man with One Red Shoe, Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters in 1986 and, later, When Harry Met Sally

In 1983, Fisher married singer Paul Simon, but the marriage was an explosive and tumultuous one according to  author Peter Ames Carlin; which he says was compounded by mood swings, depression, and drug use as well as her own personal demons and although the relationship went from on again to off again and back, the pair finally divorced in 1984.

Her drug abuse became well known, beginning at the age of thirteen smoking marijuana, The Telegraph noted. Fisher recalled her experiences dabbling in cocaine and LSD and was largely documented in her 1987 best-selling semi-biographical novel "Post Cards From The Edge" which turned into a critically acclaimed live-action film loosely based on the novel of the same name.

By 1984, Fisher was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental disorder  with periods of depression and elevated mood and has become a outspoken advocate of mental health awareness.

Continuing throughout the '90s, Fisher has become a writer by publishing Surrender the Pink and Delusions of Grandma; additionally, Fisher has also written numerous scripts for Hollywood movies; albeit uncredited for The Wedding Singer, Hook and Sister Act.

Carrie Fisher's only child Billie Lourd was born on July 1992. The star of the hit television series Scream Queens's talent agent father Bryan Lourd, dated Fisher for 3 years; giving birth to Lourd, but divorced and was married to Bruce Bozzi.

Fisher's role in The Force Awakens brought her back into the spotlight with her portrayal of everyone's beloved Princess Leia, whom at that point in the film, is now a general. However, since Fisher wrapped up production on it's untitled sequel, it is with a heavy heart that perhaps that may very well be her final film role.

Carrie Fisher.  1956-2016. She leaves behind a husband and lovely daughter Billie Lourd. Not only were you a beautiful person, but also one of my cherished childhood icons. May she rest in peace by all her family, friends, and worldwide fans all over.

Rest well, beloved.
