Luke Aikins, a 42-year-old American stuntman, has an experience of about 18,000 high-altitude launches with parachute.

But this time it was different: he had to land on a 30 x 30 m grid, and he did not have parachutes in case the launch went wrong.

Luke hit the grid (which is a third of a football field) at a speed of 193 km / h; A team of researchers conceived the grid so that it slowed the stuntman enough to not hit the ground, but did not stop the fall in a way too sharp to damage it.

The grid was supported by 4 high poles 60 m , and there was also a second reserve network where there were problems in the first.

During its free fall of nearly 8000m, Aikins was driven by a more advanced system, which signaled the right direction to be kept by green lights while warning him with red lights on the landing site whenever the direction was wrong .

Luke was able to control his direction through the angle of his body with respect to the wind, an acquired ability thanks to his nearly 30 years of skydiver experience.

His helmet also had a sensor emitting a faster beep each time the fall direction approached the center of the grid, and a slower beep when he moved away (a bit like the devices that help us park).

He is not the first person to risk life for science: at the beginning of this year, Norwegian physicist Andreas Wahl drove out of a building and fired with a gun to demonstrate the laws of physics.
