VP Mike Pence Warns of Possible Cold War with China

On Tuesday, Vice President Mike Pence made a very interesting statement to the Washington Post reporter, Josh Rogin.

Pence told me in an interview that Trump is leaving the door open for a deal with Xi in Argentina, but only if Beijing is willing to make massive changes that the United States is demanding in its economic, military and political activities. The vice president said this is China’s best (if not last) chance to avoid a cold-war scenario with the United States.

Trade tensions have escalated between Beijing and Washington this year as Trump has slapped $250 billion of Chinese products with new tariffs. The two countries have been at it with these tariffs with neither side budging. China hasn't been happy. Mr. Pence said the only way China could avoid an all-out cold war was to “fundamentally change its behavior”. He said: “The United States won’t back down.” These statements are all before the meeting between Mr. Trump and Jinping at the end of November where they will be meeting in Argentina to discuss the future of their countries and where trade will go. So, if the two countries end up in some kind of war, how does it look for the US?

Now yes, the US also has allies, but a lot of actions by Mr. Trump during his administration could put them into question of exactly who would come to his aide should China and their allies decide to attack the US. France's president Macron has recently said he wants his country to have a strong independent military. It's unclear who would stand where if China or Russia made some kind of large move, but the outcome would be bloody. Do you think you're prepared?
