Corona injuries increased 50% in South Africa within 24 hours

The number of new cases of Covid-19 in South Africa rose by more than 50 percent within 24 hours, according to official figures published Thursday, in the midst of a new wave with the outbreak of two new mutant sub-Omicron.
And the National Institute of Infectious Diseases detected 9,757 new cases of the virus, which is 50 percent more than on Wednesday, when 6,170 infections were recorded.

The rate of positive tests reached 25.9 percent, which is the highest percentage recorded in months, and seven people died as a result of Covid in the past two days.

At the end of April, the Center for Innovation and Epidemic Response warned of a new epidemic wave in South Africa, the country most affected in the continent by the virus, according to official figures.The country, with a population of about 60 million people, has vaccinated 45 percent of the adult population completely, and has counted more than 3.8 million injuries and about 100,350 deaths.

In early March, 48 hours passed without a Covid-related death recorded for the first time since 2020. In early April, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the lifting of all legal restrictions related to the epidemic.But the authorities reconfirmed Thursday that it is obligatory to put masks for children at school, in light of the high number of injuries.

According to the World Health Organization, the new epidemic wave in South Africa is caused by two new mutant branched from Omicron, whose severity has not yet been determined.

"Scientists from South Africa who spotted omicron late last year reported that two other omicron sub-mutants, PA.4 and PA.5, are the reason for the high number of infections in South Africa," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday.
