I wonder how many Englishmen worried about what their neighbors thought when it was time to act...or maybe thought "somebody else" would take care of the problem...or didn't want to be thought of as an "extremist"...or were looking after their paycheck
There is so much deception in modern culture. It's hard to blame people for not being able to recognize what is plainly happening before them.
True; but we have to realize people want to be deceived, as well.
Propaganda works b/c it plays on what we want.
It's hard to vet normal Muslims who don't want/believe the dar al harb/dar al islam jihad from those that do. We don't even have hard numbers as to proportions.
Interpreting Islam as an ideology, it is easy to see the Islamist influence as dominate, but other, more peaceful, interpretations can be seen as well.
So for a person to make the argument that Islam is a xenophobic and violent religion can lead to the impression that all Muslims are terrorists or jihad supporters, which we know is not true.
But to make that first argument is to be associated with making the second. Not even considering taqiya or dawah propaganda, well meaning people will throw out the accusation of "Islamophobe" b/c they don't want to do the mental work of examining the religion to see if the first argument even has merit.
The same applies to matching correlations of Muslim immigration and terror rates; people don't want to be seen as "bigoted", so they shut off basic examination.
Nobody wants the neighbors calling them "Islamophobes"
So most people would rather not see things that upset them. The Ostrich Effect
Islamist, Deep State, leftist, and self-interest (NGOs, charites, refugee resettlement programs, etc) influences all introduce their own propaganda to take advantage of this normal human tendency.
It comes down to one of the major problems with democracy; having decisions regarding your life made by people that may not be competent to do that.

I see three possibilities here:
Islam is reformed from within the Islamic community
Islam as it exists today provokes the West to reform itself politically and morally to deal with the danger.
Islam conquers the West
Russia and Asia don't have anything to worry about on a systematic level; these are pragmatic cultures that will defend themselves. I'm more worried about the corruption and pompous pretension that pollutes our own society.
