- As currently deployed, US nuclear missiles would have to overfly both China and Russia to reach North Korea.
- Going the long way around the planet would avoid China and Rusha, such a nuclear-armed ballistic missile would probably be classified as a fractional orbital bombardment system, or FOBS. These systems were banned under SALT II, but the treaty never entered into force and has since expired.
- Submarine launched missiles are also an option, but those submarines would have to be about 2,500 nautical miles from base.
