Elon Musk Shares Newest Plans About Underground Tunnels, Autonomous Teslas, Gigafactory, Tesla Semi & More!

in #news7 years ago

Elon Musk is one of the most influential people of the current time and one of the most innovative Entrepreneurs changing the world with his projects and ideas.
He works on so many different plans at once that we always have to ask ourselves"what will come next?"
A few days ago, he did a 40-minute long interview with Chris Anderson from TED Talks, and revealed some plans for his newest company.

A few months ago, Musk announced on his twitter that he will start a "boring" company - and nobody really knew if he was joking or not.
But now, he publicly spoke about this new concept for the first time ever.

Watch the full Interview here:

These are some of the key points from the Interview:

1) The "Boring Company" and his plan to avoid traffic with tunnels

Yes, Elon Musk was actually serious when he joked about creating another company - this time, a "boring" one.
In his vision, he wants to create an underground network of tunnels because he simply hates being stuck in traffic. (We can all relate to that!)
But it won't be any simple tunnel - Musk envisions cars entering the tunnels with elevators and then riding through them electric trolleys, rather than operating on their own power.
These trolleys could reach speeds up to 200km/h (124mph), and cut the time for car rides in Los Angeles over 85%.

“We’re trying to dig a hole under LA, and this is to create the beginning of what will hopefully be a 3-D network of tunnels to alleviate congestion. (...) The deepest mines are much deeper than the tallest buildings are tall, so (...) there’s no real limit to how many levels of tunnel you can have."

-Elon Musk

He's not simply talking about a few tunnels here and there.

Musk ideally plans an extremely widespread network of tunnels with over 40 levels, creating something so huge that even the terrible traffic during LA rush hours couldn't congest it.
Critics already say that this idea is very far from reality - digging underground takes a lot of time, effort and money, and the budget for such a huge project would have to be immense.
Musk responded to that by saying we need to have at least a 10-fold improvement in the cost per mile of tunneling.

2) There might be a combination between tunnels and Hyperloop.

Musk is also involved in the Hyperloop technology, an above-ground tube system that transports pods with passengers in them at high speed.
So Anderson asked if there's a possibility to combine the Hyperloop technology with the underground tunnel system.
Musk answered that this could indeed be possible, since the tunnels would be more than qualified to create the vacuum needed for the Hyperloop.

3) Shared autonomous cars will be the future.

Carsharing is already a huge success, since the cost for cars is high and space is rare, but people still don't want to miss out on the comfort of having a car.
Musk said in the Interview that shared autonomous cars are "100% what will occur - it's just a question of WHEN."

4) Tesla still has big plans for autonomous cars.

Musk set himself a very ambitious deadline, and said that Tesla was still very much on track with that: he wants to have one of his cars drive from LA to New York fully autonomously, with "no controls touched at any point during that journey."
He also stated that Tesla's technology is about 2 years away from drivers comfortably napping in the car while it's driving on its own.

“The real trick of it is not ‘how do you make it work 99.9 percent of the time,’ because if a car crashes say one in a thousand times then you’re probably still not going to be comfortable falling asleep. (...) The chance of a crash would have to shrink to one in 100 or 1,000 lifetimes in order for people to feel safe enough to nap in a self-driving car."

5) There will be more Gigafactories announced this year.

Musk created a Gigafactory last year, which produces batteries for Tesla's electric vehicles and power walls.
It is incredibly large and efficient, and Musk believes it could help the world "shift towards sustainable energy."
That's why he has big plans and will announce 2-4 more Gigafactories this year - location still unknown.

6) There will be an electric semi-truck from Tesla coming later this year.

Apparently, it will be called "Tesla Semi" - and Musk has already had a test-drive in one of the prototypes.

“When I was driving the test prototype for the first truck, it’s really weird, because you’re driving around, and you’re so nimble, and you’re in this giant truck. I drove it around the parking lot. I was like 'This is crazy.’ Driving this giant truck and sort of making these mad maneuvers.”

Amazing job, You look like great architecture too.

Man i got SO EXCITED as i watch the TED interview. I did plan to write a summary too but you wrote it better than me!

I was blown away when he talked about his plans for SpaceX especially on his deadline as to when it's possible to do a round trip to Mars. You can practically hear the loud smirk on his face as he said "Our internal projections are much more aggressive".

It's getting harder and harder not to see him as a real life iron man.

Thanks for your comment! I'm excited to see how SpaceX's deadlines will actually turn out!

Bring on the semi :p

Imagine how much gas we could save if the majority of trucks were electric... amazing! Let's hope they are going to make it to the mainstream market soon!

Bore away!

would like to see this tunnel already up and running lol

Great post. Thanks for your hard work. We've shared on our channels.
