A vicious tempest has decimated two old columns at the passages to the Taj Mahal, an authority said Thursday, underscoring the delicacy of the hundreds of years old marble landmark to love.

The four-meter high sandstone minarets beat by lavish towers were left in pieces in the wake of being felled by solid breezes late Wednesday.

"Two beautiful columns crumbled the previous evening in the midst of high-speed winds. One of the columns remained at the imperial entryway, and the other at the southern door," an authority from the Archeological Survey of India told AFP.

None of the four white marble minarets encompassing the Taj-or the dynamite gleaming tomb itself-were harmed in the tempest, experts said.

Work is yet to start on its fundamental vault, with specialists worried about how to continue with taking care of the delicate centerpiece.
