War in Syria: More than 40 dead after government attack near Damascus
The region of East Ghuta is bombed almost daily by the Assad regime because it is controlled by Islamist rebels. Dozens of civilians died in new attacks near the capital Damascus.
With new air strikes and artillery fire on the Syrian rebel area East Ghuta at the gates of the capital Damascus at least 44 civilians were killed, according to activists
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also reported at least 250 casualties. The helpers of the White Helmets said on Twitter, in an air raid on residential areas in Hamuriah 20 people were killed. The information can not be independently verified, but in the past both the SOHR and the white helmets proved to be correct.
The region of East Ghuta is one of the last areas in the civil war country which are still under control of the rebels. The government opponents there are dominated by Islamist militias. The area has been surrounded by government troops for months. Around 400,000 people there are almost completely cut off from the outside world due to the blockade. Helpers report a dramatic humanitarian situation. There is a huge lack of food and medical care.
Activists in the area reported attacks on numerous places. According to the SOHR, mainly residential areas were hit. Images of the white helmets showed victims who were buried under rubble. The photographs showed people desperately trying to rescue survivors from destroyed houses. The day before there had already been attacks on East Ghuta. As of Sunday noon, according to SOHR, the number of victims was as high as 71 killed civilians and 325 injured.
Syrian media close to the government reported that the attacks are coming in preparation for a ground offensive on eastern Ghuta. In the past weeks the violence had already escalated there over and over again. However, neither side was able to make significant ground gains. All attempts to achieve a ceasefire for the hard-fought area had failed.
