🗞 Digitization endangers women's jobs

Will my job soon be a machine? According to the World Economic Forum, digitization is particularly affecting women - for two reasons.

According to a study by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Industry 4.0 primarily endangers jobs for women. Of the 1.4 million jobs that would be threatened by the digital transformation of the working world in the US alone by 2024, the majority (57 percent) is exercised by women, according to a paper by the WEF before its annual meeting in Davos.

"This is a worrying development." In addition, women are underrepresented in areas where job growth is expected, they say. The meeting of the world economy, which starts on Tuesday in the Swiss Alps this year has a special focus on women's rights in view of the #MeToo debate.

Contrary to previous assumptions, women with jobs as secretaries or administrative employees are more at risk than their male colleagues who are employed, for example, as shiftworkers, writes the WEF, citing an analysis of the various industries and future automation possibilities. In addition, there are significantly fewer opportunities for women to change jobs than men. Industry 4.0 means the massive use of software, for example for the fully automatic control and networking of machines. Experts fear that this will eliminate a lot of simple work.

The WEF, which has produced the report with the Boston Consulting Group, is calling for better education for women in the face of these challenges. With retraining, 95 percent of workers whose jobs are most vulnerable to the next industrial revolution would have good prospects for better and higher-paid work. Without retraining, it is just two percent.

It depends on the willingness of economic leaders and top politicians to invest in retraining, which would provide workers with a bridge to new jobs, said Klaus Schwab, the founder of WEF. "The report shows that these investments are will lead to huge profits for both businesses and the economy."

I say digitalization will endanger both men's and women's job. It's a phenomenon that's not gender specific. If you find yourselves at the bottom of the food chain, doing routine tasks, you'll quickly get eliminated from the AIs and the softwares that will come to dominate the workspace. Don't work hard, work smart!
