Twitter also sold user data
After the scandal of Facebook to sell part of the data of its users for political purposes, now it is harmed others of the most famous social networks: Twitter
As revealed by the Bloomberg media this weekend, Twitter, Jack Dorsey's company, sold a package of user information from its platform to Aleksandr Kogan, the researcher behind the Cambridge Analytica data leak.
Aleksandr Kogan, the founder of the
Global Science Research (GSR) company,
created in 2013 an application that offered Facebook users predictions about their personality in exchange for accessing their personal data. The information obtained on 87 million users was subsequently sold to CA, the consulting company that used them to create algorithms and personalized messages to benefit the election campaign of Donald Trump in 2016, according to the reports of some media.
This time, Kogan gained access to a large amount of public Twitter data, according to Bloomberg.
The access, which only occurred once, offered the company a sample of random tweets that ran from December 2014 to April 2015.
GSR paid for having that access, according to Twitter acknowledged.
But Twitter said that access was only to the tweets, which is information that users decide to publish publicly in the social network, also said that since then, removed Cambridge Analytica and associated entities as advertisers in the platform.
At this point we can not know with certainty what was done with the information collected, although the short period of time and the fact that it is a random sample of tweets, it seems that it was a study or a test and not a a specific advertising campaign.
