The Increasingly Infamous "Google Memo" - Is it Sexist? Is it Dangerous?

in #news7 years ago

Good afternoon, Steemit! I was checking out my Twitter feed today and saw many Tweets and comments regarding a memo that was sent company wide by a Google employee that from my understanding has since been terminated. To summarize, his memo discussed what he perceived as differences between men and women that lead to a disparity between the number of men and women in tech. He also discussed how culture, practices and policies specifically designed to reduce that disparity could be harmful to the company's best interests, but also he touched on what could be done better. Via Twitter I learned that some employees felt the need to stay home from work due to the memo's impact on them personally. Maybe someone can help me understand that impact.

Of course there were responses regarding many facets of the discussion. Should he be fired? Was the memo sexist? If it was sexist, does that mean that any valid points are disregarded?

I'd love to hear what you all think about it. A link to an article that includes the entire memo is below.

While one may not necessarily agree with Google's practices, I believe that they are well within their rights to terminate any employee that they feel does not add value or takes away from their mission/vision.

I'm still a little in the dark on the story just briefly read through the memo and caught a gimpse of the story but the fact that anyone is surprised he was fired is beyond me. I think we all pretty much know in the workplace they don't want us rocking the boat, speaking out, or really even sharing our personal opinoins outside of workplace issues.

Totally agree. I saw a ton of 1st amendment related comments on Twitter that are fairly pointless in this discussion.
