Ex-Hurricane Ophelia - 3 dead, 360,000 homes without power

in #news7 years ago (edited)

So Ophelia is finaly starting to die off in Ireland after the country took a battering today by what was a tropical cyclone at one point before hitting the south-west coast of Ireland and travelling north on it's way through the country.

Winds speeds hitting a high of 191 kph (around 120mph) the storm has been the worst to hit the country in 50 years.

3 people were killed during the storm, 2 due to falling trees and one while using a chainsaw while trying to clear a fallen tree.

360,000 homes are also without power which may take up to 10 days for ESB to restore the damaged infrastructure to the electricity network.

To everyone out there affected by the storm and to those who are families of the deceased we all give our deepest sympathies.

Luckily my area wasn't hit too bad, while gusts still reached 131 kph, the worst damage caused was fallen trees.

I have to admit the Government did a good job preparing people and shutting down all schools and public transport to prevent loss of life.

This is still terrible news. People losing their lives in a storm. Being without electricity is not good either. Fallen trees can cause lots of damage and take time to clean up. It doesn't sound like you have much flood damage. Thanks for the update and stay safe.

Some flood damage in coastal areas but it was mostly the wind speeds ripping trees, power lines, roofs, and everything in its path. I thibk had the government not practically shut down the country today there would have been MANY more deaths. There were lots and lots of fallen trees and collapsed roofs all over the country even in the cities in the midlands. If people hadn't been told to stay home I'm sure we would have been seeing a much higher death toll.
