MANILA - Philippine military officials announced that women and children will kill women and children who fight on the ISIS side if they do not give up. The announcement came out amid Philippine government troops preparing for their last attempt to free Marawi city from extremists.
Both Armed Forces Commander Eduardo Ano and Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana agreed that now the number of militants is less than 50. They run out of food and ammunition, so Marawi must be recaptured this month.
"Killing women and children fighters is necessary because they are firing back and they also inflict injuries on our people," Ano said as quoted by Sputnik, Wednesday (6/9/2017).
Although Maute's size is small and has limited Maute resources, neutralizing the group will not be easy, the defense chief said. Because the leader of "hardcore" Isnilon Hapilon will likely continue to fight for as long as possible.
"We do not see that these people will give in. To their followers, we beg them to surrender now because they will die there," Ano said.
The number of child soldiers living with the ISIS Maute group is unclear. "Our intelligence sees them, actually, our soldiers think twice about attacking them or not, they may be hostages given firearms, like 'the scarecrows' style.We must be very selective unless they start shooting us back , then we will shoot them, "explained Ano.
There is evidence that a four-year-old boy has been recruited for battle.
"They will fight it," Ano added.
"They say, let us be martyrs, we will set an example to their colleagues and the world that in Marawi they can make a good stand and they are martyred for idol worship and imitate by other recruits," he said.
Ano estimates that it will take more than USD977 million to rebuild Marawi Town.
Lorenzana said officials had not yet decided whether to bomb the mosque where Maute was hiding. But Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte wants commanders on the ground to make a final decision.
"We asked for permission from the president, he did not want to bomb him, but he said if they still do a strong fight and will not give up and our troops will be threatened, then I submit it to the field commander to decide," said Lorenzana.
