Political Research Digest, episode 8
Source: Niskanen Center

“The U.S. has a long history of spending through the tax code, limiting revenue to provide benefits. But Congress just passed a major tax cut that limits some tax deductions, keeps others, and expands the child tax credit. How do the latest Republican efforts fit historical patterns? Christopher Faricy‘s recent article finds that Republicans usually limit credits and expand deductions, whereas Democrats do the reverse. Yet Joshua McCabe’s research finds that the child tax credit is historically a Republican policy; but its targeting is limited by a debate focused on tax relief rather than income supplementation. Both say the latest law could limit the value and political salience of major tax deductions.” [Flash audio] (01/17/18)

Source: The Intercept

“This week on Intercepted: Jeremy lays out the bloody U.S. history in Haiti and El Salvador and blasts the bipartisan, selective amnesia and historical revisionism that ‘American exceptionalism’ demands. In an exclusive interview, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard calls for direct talks with Kim Jong-un to avert a catastrophic war with North Korea. … As Robert Mueller hits [Steve] Bannon with a grand jury subpoena, former CIA officer and Cipher Brief columnist John Sipher and journalist Marcy Wheeler analyze the Russia investigation, the Steele dossier, and the Trump team’s collusion … with Israel. Leading Marxist scholar David Harvey talks about alienation and debt peonage in the age of Trump, the crimes of capitalism, and why he believes the French and American revolutions would not be possible today.” [various formats] (01/16/18)

Cyberlaw Podcast, episode 198
Source: The Volokh Conspiracy

“It turns out that the most interesting policy story about Kaspersky software isn’t why the administration banned its products from government use. It’s why the last administration didn’t. Shane Harris is our guest for the podcast, delving into the law and politics of the Kaspersky ban. Along the way, I ask why the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, which allows suits against foreign governments for torts committed in the United States, shouldn’t allow suits against foreign governments that hack computers located in the United States.” [MP3] (01/16/18)

The Jason Stapleton Program, episode 691
Source: The Jason Stapleton Program

“The Stock market gapped up to nearly 26,000 today and briefly spiked above it before retreating. As of this writing, we’re resting near yesterdays close. It’s a bad sign (when the market gaps and retreats like that). It’s a signal a retracement is coming. More and more people are starting to sound warning bells about the euphoria in the market, but nobody wants to miss the upside.” [various formats] (01/16/18)
