Campaign wars in French supermarkets by discount of 70% in Nutella

A discount of the Nutella brand in a chain of French supermarkets has caused serious scenes of violence among consumers trying to get the product.

Intermaché supermarkets offer 70% discount in Nutella, lowering the price from 4.50 euros to 1.40. A discount that has caused a real hysteria to get the products, to the point that supermarket workers have been forced to call the police.

At 8.15 there was already a line of 200 people waiting in front of the supermarket and. When the alarm announcing the opening of the store has sounded, customers have begun to run. After a few minutes, the director had to intervene. He has distributed one jar per person, protected by a security agent. The pallet has lasted 10 minutes.

Some customers arrived the night before the promotions to hide the Nutella boats in other places, and thus prevent others from buying them.

Ferrero, the Italian company that produces Nutella, has disassociated itself from the chaos generated in a statement shared on Twitter:

"We would like to make it clear that this promotion was decided unilaterally by Intermarché, and we deplore the consequences of this operation, which creates confusion and disappointment in the minds of consumers."

The promotion coincided with the threat of President Emmanuel Macron to denounce distributors and farmers who did not respect good practices in the sector. On November 14, the distribution, agrifood and agricultural sectors signed a letter of good conduct, which is supposed to allow a better distribution of value among the actors in the chain and stops the price war.
