Laika - hero of the Earth

I'd like to share news.
Today, 60 years ago, 1957 a female dog Laika was sent to the space who became one of the first animals in space, and the first animal ever to orbit the Earth.
As all animals who were prepared sending to space also Laika was found on the streets on Moscow. Soviet scientists chose to use such animals who had already learned to endure conditions of extreme cold and hunger.
Soviet personnel gave her several names and nicknames, like Kudryavka (Russian for Little Curly), Zhuchka (Little Bug), and Limonchik (Little Lemon).
There were three dogs trained for the Sputnik 2 flight: Albina, Mushka, and Laika. The dogs were trained to eat high-nutrition gel that would be their only food in space. Laika won that “competition” and scientist decidd to send her up.
Sputnik 2, Laika on the board, was sent to space on 3rd of November 1957.
Unfortunately Laika died after 5-7 hours, because of stress and overheating. The true cause and time of her death were not made public until 2002.
Although sweet Laika did not survive the space journey, the experiment proved that a living traveler would be able to stay alive when flying into orbit and could survive in a weighed stateThis flight provided scientists with initial information on how living organisms respond to space flight conditions.
On April 11, 2008, Russian officials unveiled a monument to Laika. ( first image of this post)
