According to the Recode.net website, Facebook intends to block advertisements concerning cryptocurrencies. The goal is to stop people from advertising what the company calls "financial products and services often associated with misleading or fraudulent promotional practices."

Rob Leather, Product Manager Director in Facebook, announced on the blog about the creation of a new policy regarding advertising related, among others with cryptocurrencies. As he says:

,,We want people to continue to discover and learn about new products and services through Facebook ads without fear of fraud. There are many companies that advertise binary options, ICOs and cryptocurrencies, which are not always in good faith today. [...] The new [Facebook] policy is deliberately extensive, while we are working on a better mechanism for detecting ads that mislead users. We will re-examine this policy and how we will enforce it as our signals improve."

The relative popularity of cryptocurren recently has led to the emergence of a large number of scams. Increasingly, we hear about ICO, which after collecting large sums of money "evaporate". Unfortunately, many people have lost huge amounts by investing in such projects.

New Year's resolutions by Zuckerberg

At the beginning of the year, Mark Zuckerberg published a statement in which he summarized the challenges facing Facebook in 2018. The founder of the portal has always claimed that Facebook's mission is to "give power to people". The Facebook CEO also said that he would look more closely at cryptocurrencies and cryptography - their positive and negative aspects and think about how to use them best.

I think this could be so that Facebook can bring out it's own crypto and not have any competition on it's site.

That is why they somehow protect themselves.
