What Should We Do About Guns?

The tragic school shooting in Florida is sure to have a lot of politicians and talking heads on both sides of the guns issue sprouting off.
I have lived in countries that have tough gun laws like Australia and the UK. I have also lived in countries with lax guns laws like the USA. Even within the USA, gun laws vary significantly from state to state - and I have lived in some states with tough gun laws and some with lax guns laws.
When I see a school shooting like just happened in Florida or hear about the gun deaths in Chicago every week - my heart screams impose the Australian Solution or the UK solution and stop all this killing.
But my head tells me, those solutions simply will not work here in the USA. I honestly do not know what will work - which I find very depressing.

The bottom line here is EVIL! There has never been a gun in the history of the world that was inherently evil on its own. In addition, you cannot legislate evil away. I hear people say, "how do we stop these senseless killings", my answer is, you don't. Evil has existed since the beginning of time, and it continue till the end of time. Trying to ban the instrument of violence is ridiculous, as you are not going to call for a ban on knives to prevent stabbing. But most importantly, guns are a part of our culture, and they will never be taken away without a nationwide bloodbath of resistance. But the original intent with the right to bear arms, was to keep the federal government in check, make them think twice before trying to pull off a massive power grab, via martial law, etc. In my opinion, it is the main reason why the republic has lasted as long as it has.
On one hand, I know what you say is true.
On the other, I also know when a nut case snaps, if they cannot lay their hands on guns so easily, then they could not commit such mass violence so easily. You cannot kill that many people that fast with a knife.
Of course, they could just turn to bombs or something similar - but they may blow themselves up making it.
On the third hand, I also know a good person with a gun might stop one of these evil nut cases before they do as much damage as they otherwise would.
And I also know good people obey laws - evil nut cases, not so much
How I wish there was a simple solution that would work.
I know it is extremely frustrating, but we can't solve all of the world's problems, or end the atrocities that are committed , with a piece of legislation. Our government exists only to protect our rights, not to take them away as part of a knee jerk reaction. We can't fix everything by waving a magic government wand.
