Cryptocurrencies are a serious and existential threat to both banks and governments. It logically follows that both banks and governments are going to get involved with them in an effort to either regulate them or ban them if they cannot be effectively regulated.
It's delusional to expect otherwise. The cat's out of the bag now, it's not just anarchist and libertarian technologists who are into crypto anymore; there will be many more of these companies that attempt to use the government as an arbiter or a weapon and that will hasten the government's interest in passing regulations.
