Canadian man caught with 1kg of carfentanil drug - enough to kill everyone in Canada
Last year a Canadian man was caught with 1kg (about 2 pounds) of carfentanil, a pain killer 100 times more potent than fentanyl. The drug was so pure it 1kg of it could have created 50 million lethal doses - enough to kill everyone in Canada and some.
Carfentanil can be lethal in such small doses major powers have allegedly researched using it in bioterrorism. The fact sheet on it says that as little as 20 micrograms, much less than a grain of salt, is the estimated lethal dose for humans. The drug was originally designed as a tranquilizer for very large mammals such as elephants.
It's pretty scary that someone managed to just order this drug from China and could have killed indiscriminately and pretty much undetected by tossing tiny grains of this into people's food or drinks, or grinding it into a powder and releasing it into the air in a crowded place. It is easy to imagine a single person could have killed thousands this way and a large enough group - millions. Their biggest danger would have been killing themselves through contact. Fortunately it seems the strongest motivation for acquiring this drug seems to be profit, not terror - selling it for profit cut into other drugs - also with sometimes lethal consequences through overdoses.
In another recent bust 42kg of the same substance was found although this time not as pure and only enough for 420,000 lethal one-tenth of gram doses.
