Interesting. Thanks for sharing, though I have a different interpretation of what "on the verge" means. I'm guessing the speaker just meant we are looking for life in lots of places lots of different ways and something is likely to bear fruit soon. Whether it is microscopic life on Mars, the moon, or Europa or indisputable signals from distant stars something is likely to pop up soon.

No, the scientists are just spreading hype for money. Seriously I don't think aliens would change much though. People already don't understand the greatest technologies we already possess, and how do we know that an extra terrestrial didn't bring them here? A visible landing would only cause panic and confusion.
