Two aftershocks followed a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province, a remote region near the border with Kazakhstan. At writing, 12 people had been announced dead with around 175 said to have been injured and under treatment.
The place, Jiuzhaigou, or Jiuzhai Valley, is a national park which is a popular tourist destination which has spectacular waterfalls and visited by large numbers of tourists.
In fact, around 34,000 tourists were said to be in the area when the earthquake struck and a large percentage of the dead and injured are said to be tourists. Around 31,000 people are said to have been evacuated from the area till now.
Rescue effort are still going on and number of injured and dead is expected to rise further.
