Microsoft creates it own version of Linux

This is something that I never thought I would see even 2 years ago. It seems Microsoft is finally realizing they are a dinosaur in the tech space.

The Microsoft Azure Sphere OS is aimed at IoT devices, and runs a custom version of the Linux kernel. This is an interesting move from the company that just a few years ago was calling Linux a cancer. I'm suspicious of this move. It was just 1 year ago that Microsoft joined the Linux Foundation as a platinum member.
Looking at some of the Microsoft marketing material, its not really clear what the purpose of the OS is. It loaded with buzzwords like IoT and Cloud. It even has a fair number of editing mistakes, which makes it seem rushed.

What does this mean for the future?

Could this be a part of their Embrace, Extend, Extinguish plan? I'm not sure. The OS probably wont be open-source, but Linux does have the GPLv2 license. By my understanding, at least their custom Linux kernel will need to be open-source, else they could face lawsuits. What do you thing? Comment below.
