The ship's treasure house worth about 14 billion euros remains a state secret

A few more details are known about the discovery of the Spanish galleys of San Jose a few years ago, full of gold that sunk more than 300 years along the coast of Colombia.

They are quite mysterious until now, said Rob Munier, vice president of the Woods Hole Institute of Oceanography, who discovered the wreckage. To be able to present some more details now, they had to obtain a permit from the Colombian government.

Why such a mystery is, of course, clear as soon as you see the value of the treasury value.

The precise location of the sunken ship, which is often referred to as the "Holy Grail during Shipwreck", has been an unresolved puzzle for many years. A ship with 62 cannons sank on June 8, 1708 in a battle with the British fleet in a war for Spanish succession, with about 600 people on board, and on the ship there were gold, silver, emeralds and other jewels ... According to modern standards the value of the cargo is estimated at around 14 billion euros.

They invite the Institute to find wrecks because they have quite a lot of experience with searching at deeper depths. Thus, with the REMUS 6000 autonomous submersible boat, among other things, in 2011, the wreckage of the air France 447 crashed, which crashed several hundred kilometers from the coast of Brazil in 2009.

In November 2015, REMUS 6000 made some shots of the ship at a depth of 600 meters.

The boat descended to just nine feet above the wreckage and captured some photographs and uncovered a boat of typical graves of dolphins on cannons. The engraving was the key to confirming the identity of the ship.

"The wreck was covered with mud, but the camera could see the details revealing the decoration of the cannons," said the commander of the mission, Mike Purcell. Munier continued to be overwhelmed by strong emotions when the ship was finally found.

Where the ship was discovered, of course, the public is not and probably will not reveal it for a while, because the treasure remains at the bottom of the sea. For years, the battle has begun, which country is entitled to it. Unesco calls on Colombia not to exploit the wreckage for commercial purposes.
