UnderGRADS Creator Secures Movie Rights

in #news6 years ago

It was five years ago when I wrote about the possibility of an Undergrads movie being produced as a spinoff of the animated series of the same name.

Undergrads History

Undergrads was an MTV cartoon that ran for only one season of 13 episodes in 2001. It was created by Pete Williams. Despite its quick cancellation, it gained a cult following in Canada due to it constantly showing on Teletoon. This left fans clamoring for more and wanted to see the storyline of the characters resolved. A campaign was started to bring back the beloved series.

Pete Williams was very interested in bringing the show back. The problem was that Williams did not own the rights to the TV series and there was a lot of red tape to sort through. Willams mentioned that it might be easier to secure the movie rights instead of the TV rights.

Fast forward five years later.

Movie Rights Secured!

Yesterday, on the Bring Back Undergrads Facebook group, Williams issued the following statement:

I am thrilled to share the news that we have secured the film rights from MTV to produce an Undergrads movie! One step closer, guy (slurp).

Now it's a matter of writing a script and raising the funds to hire the actors and animators. It remains to be seen if Williams will use crowdfunding as a way to fund the movie.
