RE: Meet The Candidate for US President 2020 Who Wants to Introduce Universal Basic Income - Partially Because AI Will Cause Such High Unemployment!

in #news5 years ago

There's actually a lot of data to support this. Some of the most common jobs in America are retail workers, call center workers and truck drivers, these jobs aren't just on the verge of extinction because of AI and automation, but also the likes of Amazon putting a ton of retail out of business. It's a toss up how long it will take to get driverless cars on the road and through all the regulation, but the financial incentive for that is huge. The third, an AI that can have a decent conversation about a specific topic/product, is right around the corner.

yes, this video from boston dynamics shows one aspect of how warehouse staff may be eliminated

Boston Dynamics is funded by DARPA so while they're showing a lot of practical use cases for their robots, it's funded for Military applications. Robots like that will be expensive though, a more immediate concern are things like the Amazon grocery stores with no check out counters or staff, self driving cars and AI that can hold a conversation. These things are cheaper than humans so they pose the biggest risk and displace tons of jobs relatively overnight once they're shippable.

I don't know anything about the current state of funding for boston dynamics, only that it is owned by Google - I imagine they have no problem redirecting research from one of the many robotics companies they have bought into another.
