WHAT?!? We've now got an easy to use post EDITOR!!!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #news7 years ago (edited)

I am testing out the new editor option for the first time!

Are you freakin' kidding me?!?

I LOVE IT!

I'm leaving this as a short form post because I'm only playing with the options to give my knee-jerk reactions.  Here they are:

<p>I FUCKING LOVE IT.</p>

Slight drawbacks:

  • Markdown and HTML do not appear to work while you're in EDITOR
  •  No way to center pics or text into Raw HTML so this post is being created strictly in editor.
  • You have to click the Raw HTML link to see the preview of your post.

Posting your pictures is as easy as dropping the link

Linking your text to another address is easy

* I still have not figured out how to make a photograph a clickable link.  I just tested it here and my picture disappeared.

Quick thoughts

All in all this is an amazing step forward for newbie bloggers and content creators!

There are some drawbacks but the benefits far out-weigh them.

Try it out!  I'd be interested to hear what your thoughts are on the benefits and drawbacks.

I was just so excited to see this that I completely rejected my original post to get this one DONE.

My normal formatting is out the window - but for the sake of using JUST the editor, I wanted to see what it would look like.

Being that my usual signature line is all in Markdown, I will sign off like this:

I'm a slow adopter - I've got tech I use, and if it ain't broken, don't fix it. But slowly my son drags me along - he's a computer and marketing expert, so I end up slowly deferring to him :)

I much prefer HTML because I think it gives me a lot more options. Markdown is okay but I had to learn it. It has its drawbacks and limitations too. But having never seen the editor, it was quite exciting, as you can tell. I've got a bunch of friends who may feel a little more compelled to try this place out knowing this exists now.

are they Twitter friends, perhaps? lol

I have been using it since I started. I am confused. That option has always been there for me.

I have NEVER seen the option. before today Maybe I should put this in TIL.
Personally, I probably won't use it very often but I've literally been telling everyone I know to learn markdown because I had no idea the editor existed. :D

LOL

I use it, but it seems to be there one day and not the next. Not really that frequent, but I noticed since I liked the editor but had to use the markdown a few times.

That's so cool! Not the infrequency but the fact that they're working on making the process of creating a pretty blog easier for people. I am literally stunned with joy about this development. I should add the post to TIL because apparently I've had blinders on and this is not new. LOL

Another great markdown editor is at https://www.steempower.org/ I have not had time to use it, however it is side by side, still just a markdown, but you can see the changes on the right as you go.

Thank you for the link, @smysullivan. I will bookmark that for people who are new to blogging.
I personally love HTML because I've been using it since the 90s. Markdown is new to me but not difficult. I feel like I've got more options "doing it the hard way".

it existed but now i understand, many times it vanishes. i think it may have to do with the browser but it happens to me, if you copied you text and pasted, it will disappear. so first, you will need to have clicked on editor, then it will change to markdown, then when you paste in, it will stay as it is. now i get you. took me time to figure that out. the editor usually always disappears in my case, when you paste

I have noticed that the option to switch will disappear if there is any data in the input box. For instance, if there is a space or a return key hit, it looks as though there is nothing there, but if you place your cursor in the box and press backspace until you are at the start, then DEL until there is nothing left, the option to switch to editor pops back up at the top.

I did notice when writing this post that only one of my headers defaulted back to normal text after I assigned it a header then waffled between the editor and HTML so I could see the preview.

I am a dedicated Chrome user. Chances are this is the first and last time I use the editor so the drawbacks on my post are about as far as I'll explore on it. Most of the time I've been writing my posts directly in the text box - though I should get in the habit of writing in word or notepad and pasting it because I've lost tons of material in the past - not here but on other platforms.

I know some people who haven't discovered there are stars in the sky lol

LOL - I can take the teasing - but this is fabulous...and from what I'm reading in comments - inconsistent.
Wait...there are STARS in the SKY? I thought the sky fell a long time ago. ;D

oh, you're sharp, mere. (I only tease friends)

It's been there since I remember. What I missed was Raw HTML when it was gone for a while.
Centering image is big for me. :-)

You know what's strange is one of the pictures with the arrow says "Markdown" but by the time I finished the post it said "Raw HTML" and markdown wasn't an option anymore. I didn't take a screenshot of it but I just started a dummy post to see what it would do - and that's what it's done. Very strange. You know, I'm wondering if it's possible that I simply haven't seen this before hand because apparently the editor comes and goes - kind of like our notices do?

There was a time "Raw HTML" option was gone and I'm told by a few the "Markdown" will work. So, I paste my HTML text into the "Raw HTML" or "Markdown" whatever is available. Supposed because we are in Beta, a lot of strange still going on.
There's a few times after posting my HTML and I needed to edit, I did it in whatever Editor mode to correct some typo and post but it messed up the alignment and order of my images. Since then, I do one of 2 things when I edit:

  1. When Raw Html or Markdown is available, go into that mode that make changes.
  2. When not available, clear all the text and usually Raw Html or Markdown becomes available again and I correct the text in my file and paste the whole chunk in again.

I am with @smysullivan - when I got on here in Aug. it was here and that is how I used to make all my posts the first cpl. mths since Markdown scared me lol, and like he says -- seemed to be here some days and others not.

I have not used this format since I don't even remember when now. And you know me, I am a bit of a tech idyit

I am glad you are so excited though LOL, I smiled the whole time reading the post and comments lol

There sure is a mixed bag of people who didn't know Editor was available - mostly new people. Perhaps the SteemAncients are being nice? LOL
I would definitely encourage everyone to learn HTML and Markdown and not rely on the editor, especially as they stretch their blogging wings and get a little more fancy with their formatting. :)

Will give it a shot as soon as I am doing my next post!

@meesterboom, you've been here a while. Have you ever seen the editor before today?

When I first started there was an editor on mobile. It was a bit of a WYSIWYG kind of thing. I found it hard to use though and eventually switched to markdown. It does sound a bit similar to the one you describe! I haven't seen it for a while but then I want looking for it once I discovered markdown!

missy you are always the first to find these things!

It certainly looks smarter than we're accustomed to, but I've gotten used to the Markdown quirks. Still, innovation!

It seems we may have been in the dark, Lloyd. Apparently the editor is NOT new - just new to us. LOL
I've gotten used to markdown as well so I'll stick with it, but for a quickie post - the editor is an excellent tool.

That's not new. It has always been there. I think they are planning on upgrading it at some point though:)

LOL
So I'm finding out @thecryptofiend. I'm reading comments about how it's not consistently there. Personally, I will rarely use it. I like the "control" of putting in HTML or Markdown, but someone new to blogging and new to Steemit will definitely benefit. I seriously must have been sleeping under a rock since July!

It disappears as an option if you start typing in html or markdown I think.

This is helpful for a newbie!!!! Thank you.

You know what's funny? I'm NOT a newbie and I'm excited about this. Apparently it's been around since the beginning? WHO KNEW? Not me! hahahaaa

That is sweet!

Indeed! When was the first time you discovered/used the editor? I've been here since July and just found it! LOL

but this has always existed!

I'm getting a lot of ribbing from my friends who've known this existed, and I'm also finding people who had no idea. LOL I'm in the latter group and I know I've clicked every clickable button and link to explore Steemit. Kind of funny but very cool.

it is indeed. i have laughed at myself really! i had like a month of difficulty posting as i cudnt figure out where the editor button was disappearing to. i thought it was cookies and delelted them. on my blog there is evidence as there were many of my posts where my links are just bare because i could hide them

That would drive me crazy. I'm all about WYSIWYG, an accurate preview and don't mess with my stuff if I put it there, you know? I try my very best to post and never edit so that's important to me. I could probably count on one hand how many posts I've gone and edited since I've been here - more as a challenge to myself than anything else. I think that comes from my newspaper background though. :)

I feel kinda bad for laughing when I realized what you were talking about...lol I'm sorry you never noticed this!
But for reals though - I like markdown, but I figured if I was going to learn either that or html to create posts, it would be smarter to learn the one that is more widely used..so that's what I've been doing, learning html. Haha

ROFL - there's that saying I don't know what I don't know.
Thankfully I've been writing in HTML since the 90s so learning markdown was fairly easy. Actually, I think of it as the bastardized child of HTML. Editor is great for new-to-blogging people - great to get a quick start but I think it's a good practice for everyone to learn HTML and markdown.

I can't tell you how true that saying rings in my life. hahaha
That is great! I have definitely learned the basics..Maybe I should delve deeper.
