CANCER INCIDENCE IN NIGERIA NOW 100,000.

in #news7 years ago (edited)

Recent report reveal that 100,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in Nigeria yearly. This for me is a huge cause for concern. All of us who practice public health and other stakeholders have an obligation in the sustainable development goals (#SDGs) to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases (e.g cancer and  cardiovascular diseases) by 2030. I believe in employing holistic prevention strategies to manage cancer all over the world. Cancer screening for early detection of malignant #tumors should done routinely by all who are at risk of any kind of cancer. Once a year  is usually recommended. When cancer is detected very early, it can be taken care of. However, when patients present with late stage cancer, it becomes very difficult to manage.

SOME  CANCER PREVENTION STRATEGIES

1. Increase physical activity

2. Reduce excessive alcohol use and tobacco smoking

2. Include cruciferous vegetables (e.g. brocolli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale) and berries in your daily diet. Eat more of these cancer fighting vegetables.

3.  Get screened for cancer once every year.

Local authorities here are said to be planning a ban on plastic food containers which they deem to cause cancer particularly where heating of food is involved. What's your take on that?

I absolutely support the planned move to ban cheap plastic food containers. Most of the cheap plastic food containers contain bisphenol A (BPA) which is said to be a carcinogenic (cancer causing) compound. These carcinogens are usually released from BPA plastics when they are heated. These days, I try as much as possible to avoid those cheap plastics and use BPA free ones. However, glass wares are the safest to use.

Thanks, I will take heed of that and move to glass.
