I often wonder if there's some way to blend capitalism and socialism into some hybrid. We kind of have socialism for the military for example, but the military actually produces jobs and stimulates economic growth. The funding is socialistic but the spending fuels capitalism. If we can justify so much military spending could that spending be put to better use then just more hardware? It's not like we don't have enough ordinance to protect ourselves.

What if we redirected it towards education housing and healthcare, but instead of the government running everything the money was spent on private capitalistic companies competing with each other to drive costs down and grab market share. Is such a world possible without greedy, governments and corporations grabbing control? Sounds utopian, but I still often wonder if the two systems could be merged into something that works better than either standing alone.

I think you're right. All promises made by socialism sound great. Who wouldn't want all your basic needs met? That's why historically socialist leaders were able to get the people to vote for those ideas, but once the reality sets in of how much it actually costs and how much you have to give up to fund it, the luster of the promise begins to lose its shine.
