Procurement abroad allows large businesses to reduce the cost of production of products containing metal: from cans to pipelines. But because of this, its own American steel industry suffers, which is in a permanent crisis.

Since his election to the highest office, Trump has sought to rectify the imbalance - either through pressure on China or through NATO allies. Introducing duties on steel and aluminum, the US president chose the second option.
