Congress Dodged A Gov’t Shutdown. What Happens Next and More in Politics Today

Stories like these from the Washington Post, filled with implicit bias, are part of the problem.

With votes Friday morning in the House and Senate, Congress narrowly avoided a partial shutdown of the federal government — but only for a week. Members of both chambers will return next week to resume work on a measure to keep the government running through September. While the worst possible outcome was prevented (this is hyperbole designed to scare uninformed Americans), this ongoing struggle with one of Congress’s most basic functions illustrates several challenges facing the Republican Congress (this is a set-up phrase setting the stage to lay blame at the feet of the Republicans).

While Congress managed, for now, to escape the worst possible outcome (note how the inflammatory hyperbole is repeated just one sentence later), spending bills remain one of the institution’s few "must pass" items each year.

The next set of bills won’t necessarily be easier, with questions about whether to relax the limits on discretionary spending ("relax the limits" What an innocuous, even inviting, phrase that means continue to spend money the govt doesn't have) put in place in 2011 and Trump’s first full set of budget requests on the horizon.

Republicans’ intraparty divisions, Democrats’ attempts to exercise influence where they can, and a polarizing president likely mean a long summer (and fall?) of fiscal fights ahead." (See how they end the paragraph with negative descriptions of both the Republicans (intraparty divisions) and Trump (polarizing) but the Democrats are described as just trying to "exercise influence"?).

This type of bias is rampant in the media. It is rarely "unconscious bias". These words and phrases are carefully chosen to adhere to an editorial and political ideology rather than simply report the news. I read dozens of comments on these threads of people regurgitating talking points and betraying a lack of reasoned opinion. Worse still, these comments are mindlessly "liked" hundreds of times by the "me-too" mob. These issues matter. Abandoning the Constitution matters. Government over-reach and spending matters. Don't treat these issues like a Facebook post about last nights dinner. Don't just read the headlines of biased media outlets. Think. Understand. Act. It matters.

I know many (if not all) of you liberals have been brainwashed into believing that conservatives are evil people who are going to get us all killed in a nuclear war, or are going to destroy the planet through environmental recklessness, or are going to enact terrible draconian laws that will discriminate against minorities, women, homosexuals, and others. That's what the socialist Democommies WANT you to believe! That's what the leftist media either say outright or imply practically every day. It's such a pity! It's really hard to get someone who's that brainwashed to question what the MSM tells them! And yes, there are those on the right who wouldn't believe anything a liberal says. I blame our schools for not teaching people to think for themselves!

Listen, our brains were not meant to be just empty receptacles that parents, teachers, politicians, and advertisers can pour information into! We have to question EVERYTHING! Be analytical! Test the truthfulness and accuracy of what we read, hear, and see! Don't just parrot stuff you hear! The media and politicians are MANIPULATIVE! If we don't learn to think for ourselves, we are nothing but pawns and slaves.
