I originally published this April 4, 2013 in my discontinued column on Examiner.com.

On March 15, 2013 homeowner Olander D. Cuthrell, 41, called 911 because his house and car were set on fire while his family slept inside. When emergency services arrived the words "nig*er" were prominently painted on two different parts of Cuthrell's property. The police concluded the incident was a random hate crime in Chesterfield County, Virginia where such behaviors are not entirely uncommon.

WRIC.com locally reported the first incident where Cuthrell said:

It's hard now sleeping... There's no peace, there's no sense of security.

He went on to say:

Get a life, get some education, do something positive with the energy that you have. You could have been looking at five counts of capital murder. The reality is it could have been five counts of capital murder.

But it has now been reported by WRIC.com that all was lip service in an attempt to perhaps extract money from an insurance policy, or at least that is one theory police are investigating.

Olander Cuthrell was arrested by the Chesterfield County Police Department and has been charged with two felony counts of arson. Fraud charges will likely be determined later.

He is currently being held without bail in the Chesterfield County Jail, and will face a judge on April 17.
