CALL FOR BETTER SECURITY AND PROVISION OF BASIC AMENITIES IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES.

School campuses used to be considered a safe heaven. A home away from home for students, catering for their every need, Nigerian universities has however failed woefully in carrying out its core duties.
From all indications the Nigerian school system was designed to make the Nigerian student fail. The entire system was designed to work against the Nigerian student, from the surroundings, classrooms, teachers’ attitude and the absence of basic amenities.
The success of every student is brought about the balance in all areas of their life, family, financial, emotional, physical, health, social etc. A student who lacks the necessary balance of all these in the right proportions is bound to fail regardless of how bright such a student might be.
While most Nigerian universities can be applauded for their work in the classroom, they do not bother themselves with students’ welfare outside of the classroom. Basic amenities like constant electricity and water supply are a rarity in almost all public schools, good lightening systems are absent and learning classrooms are not conducive. Intra campus security is also at its lowest level.

Just on Sunday a member @tudors of our community and a student of the University of Uyo, Uyo was robbed of his mobile phone and some other valuables, the same night the female hostel at the permanent campus was broken into and large numbers of phones and laptops were carted off. Such traumatizing experiences are capable of affecting student’s performances negatively.

If the government and School authorities have withheld those vital necessities from the students, they should at least provide adequate security within the school environments and substantial security also for the school community environs, if students can’t be sure of safety anywhere they should at least feel safe on their own school campuses.
Using this medium to humbly appeal to all bodies involved to do all that is necessary so these basic services will be provided to our students, no bad could possibly come from this. It would instead lead to better graduates who will be the driving force in the growth and development of our very own great nation. The giant of Africa.
