Norwegian Language Council: The New Word of the Year is "fake news"

in #news7 years ago (edited)

The Language Council thinks this year's new word is the term "fake news". The word went off with the victory in competition with "Swedish conditions", "October children" and "little ones".
This case is about:

Language
"The word is not completely new, but its use has exploded over the past year," says Senior Researcher Ole Våge, Senior Advisor in the Language Council.

The terms "plastic whale", "lynlader" and "imamsleiker" were also included in the assessment, but did not reach fake news.

The term "fake news" seriously entered the public when Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton barked together in the US election campaign.

"This is a word that has set the agenda and received much attention in the US election campaign in 2016, and that attention has continued," says researcher Bente Karlsnes to NRK.
