See you soon Notre-Dame

The first colossal to catch my imagination as a kid was an animated one: The Hatchback of Notre-Dame, the Disney’s classic based on Victor Hugo’s novel.
I remember the fire sparking at the end of the movie, unraveling the plot with the flames the villain’s Frollo was so obsessed with.
Now, ironically Frollo’s delirium is devouring the very set of that story!

To the kid in me this is unbelievable, surreal and sad. The news hit me few hours ago while I was sipping my beer at a karaoke bar. I took the news quite good on the spot, even having the courage to make jokes about the situation: “If it was in Malta they would seize the moment to build new ‘luxury’ apartments on its place!”
Then the paranoia about a possible terrorist attack built up, disappearing fast. Luckily this looks a remote eventuality according to the updates.
While processing the event I managed to think: “Well, there is nothing we can do about it”, as the updates began to take into account the high chance that nothing will remain standing.
Whether the structure will stand or not, I realized these important things:

1. World Heritage sites are fabulous gems that we cannot take for granted. Today are there, but maybe tomorrow they are gone. Let’s visit them while we can!
2. As long Note Dame is fabulous, it is still something material, so unlike people, it can be brought back to “life”. Glad that nobody got hurt.
3. Notre-Dame will be back to its glory in no time, because I know how tenacious the French people are! My heart is with them now.
   Maybe it’s time to cry, but it is eve already time to react and please, do not let yourself go to easy, tempting conspiracy theories. Those are the last thing we need now.
