UPS Workers Inadvertently Make Instructions on How Police Should Deal With Dogs

in #news6 years ago

One of the unfortunate things that police in America have become notorious for in recent years, is the shooting and killing of innocent family dogs.

Sadly, “Police Kill Dog” is not an uncommon segment of headlines across the nation. It happens so often that it has its own category on The Free Thought Project’s website as well as many other media outlets.According to an unofficial count done by an independent research group, Ozymandias Media, a dog is shot by law enforcement every 98 minutes.

This disturbing trend led to WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, filing a Freedom of Information Act request for use of force incidents within the Buffalo police department only. What they found was shocking.According to use of force reports requested by WGRZ-TV under the Freedom of Information Law, Buffalo Police shot 92 dogs from Jan. 1, 2011 through Sept. 2014. Seventy-three of those dogs died. Nineteen survived.

However, pizza delivery drivers and postal workers don't seem to have much of a problem interacting with dogs, and they are in the same situation that police are in, going to a strangers house with no clue what to expect. In fact, these delivery workers actually knock on more strange doors and encounter more dogs in just a week than many police do in their entire careers.

UPS workers accidentally made this point quite clear with a new Facebook page showing delivery drivers having fun with dogs. The page features dozens of videos and pictures showing UPS drivers interacting with dogs in a positive way.

They even have photos of UPS drivers being greeted by deer, or goats jumping into their vehicles. The page has nearly 2 million likes, which is a massive following for such a niche page. They also have an Instagram for these photos, which has 175,000 followers.

False, they have problems all the time! And they are not in the same situation, they don't even go inside the house and act aggressively to the owners! People are happy to see the mail man and pizza guy and they stay outside and keep their hands to themselves.
I had a police officer pull over when I was walking my dog one time and I thought they were going to hassle me for no leash but instead she just wanted to say how beautiful she was and then she went on her way.

Of course if you google "cop shoots dog" you will get only stories of cops shooting dogs and then perhaps conclude that cops all live to shoot dogs, or you could google "cop saves dog" and then conclude that we don't even need the humane society!

The killing of dogs has never been about the protection of police officers.

It is about control and intimidation of the public.
It is also about training police officers to shoot people of the public, who soon will be labelled as "dogs" in police officer only publications

It is already an US vs Them thing.

It's also transparent evidence that police have no flippin' clue how to treat others even if they do manage to have the best intentions, and lean more "Andy" than "Barney."

These UPS drivers have to be making deliveries every day to the same address. In my neck of the woods, it is standing operating procedure to never get out of the truck without honking first to see if a person or dogs show up first. If it's dogs, there's a good chance the delivery isn't happening. Even the USPS ladies won't get out of the vehicle without casing the place because of strays that show up.

And then ditto everything @funbobby51 said.

I worked very briefly as a seasonal assistant for UPS. Got into a car accident after my 1st day. But they covered dogs in our training, and it wasn't "If there's a dog, skip the stop," unless the dog was aggressive or there were signs posted.

@jacobtothe In these hollers, it is safer to assume that every dog is a guard dog, or a dog that will grab your heal or thigh as soon as you turn your back a little. In other words, assume aggression is probable. People don't socialize their dogs. Ain't no good reason to. Because guarding.

Anyone making a social call, is invited or calls ahead. You don't leave guests out in the drive to make their way to the door. People meet their guests in the driveway for good reason.

Don't feel bad. I had to be informed. I couldn't understand why the locals, if they had to stop by to check about the haying or some such, would just sit out in the car and honk until I went to see what they wanted. One cross day I asked, "Why the hell do ya'll sit out here honking when the front door is clearly open? Why can't ya'll come knock at the door? All the people around here do this!" They patiently explained that no one wants to meet the owner's dogs without the owner and that dogs often just lurk around until the car door is opened. LOL I have had people show up at my door dragging tree limbs and shaking like a leaf because they could hear the dogs but didn't know where they were and but the car is broke down and they need help.

It is what it is.

There were a couple stops on the route for my one day of work where the driver did say to not turn my back on the dog, or where the box out front for deliveries was the only option if the owner did not arrive to keep the dog in check. But even though I am in a rural mountain area, people generally have their dogs trained to not attack on sight.

There's a difference between a dog that is guarding, or cornering, or defending, or attacking. Being in the mountains, you know this full well and you know full well a dog will read a situation differently according to how a person moves and smells.

And most especially dogs are unpredictable if their master is upset and or not present.

And you know there's a difference between making a drop and making an arrest.

If you don't know these things, it would not be wise for you to stop off at my place except to drop a package at the end of the drive, down by the street. Cause from the front to the back and 10 acres around, there is no fence. I make no promises about my dogs, ever. Cause I don't know how you're going to move nor how you smell.

Unless of course you want to drive all the way up to the barn and honk and wait and see if I'm around. Then I make no promises about the mud.

This kind of game is very exciting. https://goo.gl/Dd9394
