Solar eclipse 2017: Moment International Space Station passes in front of 'blood moon

Millions of Americans were plunged into darkness as the moon passed in front of the sun on Monday morning.

It was the first coast-to-coast total eclipse in 99 years.

And in Banner, Wyoming, a camera was able to catch the incredible sight of the ISS crossing the sun at roughly five miles per second.

The crew on the space station is comprised of six astronauts, including NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson, Jack Fischer, and Randy Bresnik; Russian cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy; and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Paolo Nespoli.

The first sighting of the total solar eclipse - where the sun is completely obscured by the moon - was in Oregon, a state on the west coast of North America.

The fascinating lunar shadow then travelled right across to the east coast, moving at 1,500mph and with a journey time of approximately 94 minutes

The moon completely covered the sun

After weeks of anticipation, the sight of the moon’s silhouette passing directly in front of the sun, blotting out all but a halo-like solar corona and causing a precipitous drop in temperature, drew whoops and cheers from onlookers gathered at Roshambo Art Farm in Sheridan, Oregon.

“It was incredible,” said Cheryl Laroche, 57, who along with her husband, Rob, planned their eclipse trip for about a year.

“It was literally cold and dark. The light was blue. It wasn’t eerie. It was just different.”

Those who were standing directly in the moon's shadow on Earth, saw the disc of the moon move slowly in front of the sun until it covered it completely, leaving only a burning ring of light around the edge.

Those who were not in the so-called "path of totality" have only glimpsed a partial solar eclipse.

The sky darkened and the temperature dropped, as the moon obscured part of the sun from view.

The best place to see the solar eclipse was in the United States, where the path of totality passes through 11 US states.

The eclipse reached totality in Oregon at 10:15 a.m. PDT (18.15 BST
Thousands turned out to watch the eclipse, with viewing parties being held around the country.

At a viewing event led by Native American elders in Oregon’s Ochoco National Forest, viewers gazed at the sun and the moon while holding their hands up in prayer.

With the sun disappearing, the darkness meant that planets and stars were more visible to the naked eye.
