Blockchain Summit 2017: "Do not shy away from technologies designed by state skeptics"

in #news7 years ago

In the end it was damned fast for Austrian conditions. It was not until the end of October that it became known that the first research institute for crypto-economics was being created at WU Vienna (Trending Topics reported). Yesterday, the university council gave the go-ahead for the interdisciplinary project. "It may even be the first initiative in the world to adopt this approach," said outgoing Minister of Economic Affairs Harald Mahr in his welcoming address.

"Those who want to be at the forefront of innovative leaders should not shy away from technologies designed by state skeptics. In today's world, the race often decides in favor of those who are capable of 'both thinking' and 'thinking'. 'Either or' has become an anachronistic attitude, "Mahrer continued in front of around 500 visitors at the Blockchain Summit 2017.

Workshops in nine categories

The crowd was so large that the registration was shelved shortly before the start of the event. The Blockchain Summit 2017 was also dominated by the Research Institute for Crypto-Economics. In nine different workshops, the opportunities and risks in various sectors of blockchain technology were discussed and first pilot projects were considered.

As part of the Blockchain Austria initiative, the ministry had approved half a million euros in funding for the institute. The decentralized association of researchers, politicians and business people wants to make the blockchain issue one of the most important technological drivers in Austria (Trending Topics reported).

At the beginning of the event WU-Rector Edeltraut Hanappi-Egger spoke about the reasons for the institute. "In order to do justice to the potential of the technology, not only the technical possibilities must be in the foreground, but these must be considered together with economic, social and legal aspects. As has been practiced at WU in research and teaching for years. "

Between dApps and decentralized administration

In the following years, the institute will be assigned professors from the fields of business administration, tax, law, economics and business informatics under the direction of Alfred Taudes. They cooperate with researchers at the University of Vienna, the Technical University and the non-university research institutions SBA Research and RIAT (Institute for Future Cryptoeconomics, read more here).

In addition to classic outputs such as publications and lectures, the institute also wants to develop best practices. Possible topics are decentralized applications (dApps), the interaction with IoT, artificial intelligence, decentralized administration and crypto law. The institute should also serve as a contact for politics and the community.
