It will be interesting to see how it turns out, does he have a private lawyer? In some states users should be aware that concentrates and edibles can result in much more serious charges. I don't find it hard to believe that someone who has 2lbs of cannabis butter and a bag of weed and a buddy over was emitting a noticeable smell of cannabis in the apartment building.
the smell can come from how you make the oil you bind to the butter. Or baking with the butter in an oven.
that and smoking weed all day
